PROJECT OVERVIEW
Wakely Associates partnered with Macomb County to transform the historic Old County Building into a modern, fully functional civic facility as part of the County's long-term recovery and redevelopment efforts following the building's 2014 fire. As a key component of the County's facilities master plan, the project gave new life to the 13-story building through a comprehensive adaptive reuse and modernization initiative, ensuring that this important public asset could once again serve the community while supporting critical government operations.
The 110,000-square-foot renovation included the relocation of the Juvenile Court and Friend of the Court services into the reimagined facility, creating a modern environment designed to support the unique operational needs of the County's judicial system. Through thoughtful planning and occupied renovation strategies, the building was transformed into an efficient, accessible, and secure civic facility that enhances workflow, improves the experience for staff and visitors, and supports the delivery of essential public services. The adaptive reuse approach allowed Macomb County to preserve an important community landmark while investing in a facility capable of serving residents for decades to come.
More than a building renovation, the Old County Building represents Macomb County's resilience and long-term vision for its public facilities. By restoring and repurposing a significant civic asset after the 2014 fire, the County created a modern judicial and administrative facility that balances historic preservation with contemporary functionality. The completed project stands as a testament to thoughtful planning, responsible stewardship of public resources, and a continued commitment to providing high-quality government services to the residents of Macomb County.
